TVD Interview: Let’s talk about breast cancer with Dr. Saavedra from “De comadre a comadre”

(English below)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women after skin cancers. In fact, a woman in the US has a 12% risk (a 1 in 8 chance) of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Also, there is a 1 in 38 chance that a woman will die from breast cancer. Regular screening tests help detect cancerous breast tissue that may be present in otherwise healthy people. With proper diagnosis and treatment in the early stages, breast cancer can be one of the most treatable forms of cancer.

For the women of our community, facing this condition is even more difficult; It is not only the fear of facing the diagnosis but also the worry of not being able to afford treatment due to lack of health insurance. In this interview, Dr. Saavedra, Director of “De comadre a comadre”, shares with us the services offered by the organization and how she is dedicated to serving Hispanic / Latino women and their loved ones through advocacy, education , information, resources and support on breast health and breast cancer. All of their services are free and provided in both Spanish and English.
