Turkish businessman and philanthropist Osman Kavala was arrested by police in Istanbul shortly after he was acquitted and released after his trial for supporting the protest movement in Istanbul’s Gezi Park in 2013, media reports said on Wednesday Turks.
Osman Kavala should be summoned by the Istanbul public prosecutor’s office for his formal arrest and sent back to prison, said the relatives.
Excluded in the Gezi case, for which he spent more than two years behind bars, Osman Kavala is now detained in connection with the failed coup of July 2016 against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, attributed by the government to supporters of preacher Fethullah Gülen.
The acquittal of Osman Kavala, whose release was requested in December by the European Court of Human Rights, was welcomed by human rights organizations and his arrest aroused misunderstanding and anger.
