Turkey: Recep Tayyip Erdogan announces natural gas discovery in the Black Sea

This week, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had promised good news, on Friday the head of state of Turkey announced a major discovery: a drilling ship had discovered large reserves of natural gas under the Black Sea. It was said to be the largest in the history of the country.

According to Erdogan, the amount of gas discovered is 320 billion cubic meters. There are also clues for other finds in the region. The Turkish drilling ship “Fatih” carried out exploration work in the western Black Sea near the border with Romania last month and has apparently struck gold.

Erdogan hopes that the extraction and use of the gas could begin by 2023. The Reuters news agency had learned from insiders that the amount of gas should be enough to meet Turkey’s needs for 20 years. If the find is confirmed, the country’s dependence on costly energy imports from Iran, Iraq and Russia could decrease. Last year they cost the country $ 41 billion.

Erdogan also announced that controversial drilling in the Mediterranean to continue. There is currently a conflict with Greece and the EU about this. Greek and Turkish warships had stalked each other in the region in the past few days. Erdogan said there will be no rest until Turkey has become a net energy exporter.
