ANKARA – Ministry of Defense (Kemhan) Turkey welcoming the release of Kalbajar, Azerbaijan, from the occupying Armenian forces after nearly three decades.

“The heroic Azerbaijani army entered Kalbajar after Aghdam as part of the agreement signed after his big victory in Karabakh. Kalbajar met the original owner after 27 years,” the Turkish Defense Ministry said on Twitter.

“(Flag) Our glorious Star and Crescent will now be hoisted at Kalbajar with the sound of the call to prayer (call to prayer),” the Turkish Ministry of Defense said, quoted as saying Anatolia.

The statement came after Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defense on Wednesday (25/11) morning announced that the Azerbaijan army entered Kalbajar after 27 years of illegal occupation of Armenia. (Also Read: UAE Stop Issuing New Visas for Citizens of 13 Muslim Majority Countries)

According to a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement, which Baku and Yerevan signed on November 10 after the 44-day war, Armenia was supposed to leave Kalbajar on November 15. (See Infographic: Even though Trump is no longer in power, Iran Rejects New Negotiations)

Relations between the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia have been strained since 1991 when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh or Upper Karabakh.

The new conflict erupted on September 27, and the Armenian army continued attacks on civilians and Azerbaijani troops, even violating three humanitarian cease-fire agreements for more than six weeks.

Azerbaijan liberated several strategic highland areas, cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages from Armenian occupation to date.

Prior to the most recent Karabakh war, about 20% of Azerbaijan’s territory was under illegal Armenian occupation for nearly three decades.

On November 10, the two countries signed a Russian-brokered agreement to end fighting and work towards a comprehensive solution.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev praised the agreement as a “victory” for his country and an “Armenian defeat”.

He said Baku’s military success allowed him to gain the upper hand to end his nearly three-decade occupation of territory.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says he has signed an “unspeakably painful” deal that would allow Azerbaijan to claim control of the territories it has recaptured in the fighting.

The Turkish government also welcomed the ceasefire, calling it a “big victory” for Azerbaijan.
