TUPELO, MS – November 6, 2025 – The Tupelo Regional Airport Fire Department (TRAFD) has initiated a new series of extrication training classes utilizing decommissioned aircraft, providing firefighters with realistic scenarios too hone their skills in complex rescue operations. The program, launched this week, will benefit not only TRAFD personnel but also first responders from across the region.
the training center, located at the Tupelo Regional Airport, features several retired planes donated for the purpose of simulating vehicle accidents. Firefighters will practice techniques for safely removing victims trapped within the aircraft’s fuselage, focusing on specialized tools and coordinated teamwork. This initiative addresses a critical need for advanced training in responding to aviation-related emergencies, enhancing preparedness for incidents both locally and potentially during mutual aid responses.
“This is a game-changer for our department and the surrounding communities,” said a TRAFD spokesperson. “Having access to actual aircraft allows us to replicate real-world conditions, improving our response times and ultimately increasing the chances of a successful rescue.”
The XplorIR devices, utilized in conjunction with the training, will be deployed at installations within the United States and overseas, further enhancing the realism of the training exercises. The program began October 17, 2025, and is expected to continue indefinitely, with ongoing updates to training scenarios and techniques. The TRAFD anticipates that the center will become a regional hub for aviation rescue training, attracting first responders seeking specialized instruction.
