Tupelo Regional Airport Fire ⁣Department Launches⁣ Advanced Extrication Training ​with Retired Aircraft

TUPELO, MS – November 6, 2025 – The Tupelo Regional Airport Fire ‍Department (TRAFD) has initiated a new series of extrication training classes utilizing⁣ decommissioned aircraft, providing firefighters with realistic scenarios too hone their ‌skills in ⁤complex rescue ⁣operations.The program, launched this week, will benefit ⁢not ⁤only TRAFD personnel but also first responders from across the region.

the training center, located at⁣ the Tupelo Regional Airport, features ​several retired planes donated for the ⁣purpose of simulating vehicle accidents. Firefighters will practice techniques⁣ for​ safely removing victims​ trapped within the aircraft’s fuselage, focusing on specialized tools ‌and coordinated teamwork. This initiative addresses a critical need for advanced training in responding⁤ to aviation-related emergencies, enhancing preparedness for incidents both locally and potentially⁤ during mutual aid⁤ responses.

“This is a game-changer for our department and the surrounding communities,” said a TRAFD spokesperson. “Having access to actual aircraft allows us to ⁢replicate real-world conditions, improving our response times and ultimately increasing ​the chances of ​a successful rescue.”

The⁣ XplorIR devices,⁢ utilized in conjunction with the training, will be deployed at installations ⁣within‍ the United States and overseas, further enhancing the realism of the training exercises.The program began October 17, 2025, and is expected to continue indefinitely, with ongoing updates ⁣to training scenarios and techniques. The ‍TRAFD ‍anticipates that the center will become a regional hub for aviation rescue training, attracting ⁢first responders seeking specialized instruction.
