Global Fund Report: 1.3 Million Died from Tuberculosis in 2023, Despite Significant Progress Against infectious Diseases
Geneva – A new report from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria reveals that 1.3 million people succumbed to tuberculosis in 2023, underscoring the continued threat posed by this infectious disease. While the numbers remain tragically high, the report also highlights significant strides made in combating HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria since 2002, with overall mortality rates falling by 63% and infection rates decreasing by 42%.
The report details that approximately 630,000 deaths were attributed to HIV last year. Despite this, the Global Fund emphasizes the impact of healthcare interventions over the past two decades. Increased access to prevention and treatment programs has demonstrably saved lives and slowed the spread of thes deadly diseases.
“With the right tools, strong partnerships and sustainable investments,we can change the course of global health decisively for the better,” stated Peter Sands,Executive Director of the Global Fund. Though, he cautioned that HIV and tuberculosis remain among the world’s leading causes of infectious disease mortality.
The fight against HIV faces a new challenge: new infection rates are currently 3.5 times higher than the 2025 global target of 370,000 new infections annually. This is despite a substantial increase in the number of people receiving HIV prevention medication, with 1.4 million people supported by the Global Fund in the last year – a 325% increase since 2023.
The Global fund is actively investing in innovative solutions to address these challenges. For tuberculosis treatment, the fund has financed the implementation of AI-based diagnostics and portable digital X-ray devices to improve detection rates. Efforts to combat malaria include the widespread distribution of mosquito nets, with 53% of at-risk populations now utilizing them – the highest percentage on record.
While the progress is encouraging, the report serves as a stark reminder that sustained investment and collaborative efforts are crucial to achieving a world free from the burden of these preventable and treatable diseases.
