TSG Hoffenheim – SC Freiburg 1: 4: Grifo shoots Freiburg against Hoffenheim in the quarterfinals

Status: 01/19/2022 10:55 p.m

In the Baden-Württemberg cup duel between TSG Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg, Vincenzo Grifo put the sports club on the road to victory.

The Italian national player scored two goals in Sinsheim on Wednesday evening (01/19/2022) and thus laid the foundation for SC Freiburg’s entry into the quarter-finals. For Hoffenheim, fourth in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup season is over.

Schlotterbeck back, Grifo puts Freiburg in the lead

Freiburg coach Christian Streich made a total of five changes compared to the 1:5 defeat in Dortmund before, among other things, the recently missing top performers Mark Flekken and Nico Schlotterbeck returned to the starting XI.

And the guests from Breisgau got off to a dream start. Less than ten minutes were played when Lucas Höler drove the ball from the halfway line in the direction of the Hoffenheim goal and Vincenzo Grifo served it in the penalty area on the inside left. The noble technician hit a hook, let opponent Kevin Akpoguma get out and flicked the ball into the far corner with his right foot – 0:1 (10th).

Handball Bebou – Grifo converts a penalty

In a fast-paced game, SC Freiburg played forward more purposefully and had the next good chance to score (23rd minute) through a direct acceptance by Höler. On the other hand, Hoffenheim’s Angelo Stiller was unlucky when Nico Schlotterbeck’s low shot was deflected just wide of the goal (31′).

In front of 500 spectators in the Sinsheimer Arena, Freiburg made it 2-0 about ten minutes before the break. Ihlas Bebou blocked a volley from Schlotterbeck from close range with a slightly outstretched arm – penalty for Freiburg. Vincenzo Grifo converted hard and placed in the left corner (36th). TSG Hoffenheim tried to catch up with coach Sebastian Hoeneß until the break, but Dennis Geiger shot over the Freiburg goal from long-range.

Kramaric brings new impetus

TSG trainer Sebastian Hoeneß brought fresh forces to the offensive in the second half with Andrej Kramaric and Munas Dabbur – that paid off. The Croatian Kramaric was involved in two good attacking scenes, once as a cross for Georginio Rutter and once with a dangerous shot from 16 meters.

In the 52nd minute, Kramaric was the center of attention again. The attacker took a cross from the right in the six-yard box straight out of the air, while trying to save Freiburg’s Schlotterbeck shot the ball into his own goal – the 1-2 goal.

Schade and Demirovic make everything clear

However, SC Freiburg’s response was not long in coming. Only three minutes later, Ermedin Demirovic served his offensive colleague Kevin Schade, who made it 1:3 with a remarkable left-footed shot (55th). The goal was initially disallowed because Demirovic was allegedly offside, but the Cologne Videokeller gave the go-ahead shortly afterwards – the goal counted.

And in the 68th minute it was Demirovic himself who made it 4-1 for Freiburg. After preliminary work by Lukas Kübler and Lucas Höler, the 23-year-old pushed the ball free-standing over the line. The resistance of TSG Hoffenheim was broken, the team from Kraichgau only rarely got in front of the Freiburg goal after the fourth goal. In the 88th minute, the ball wriggled in the Freiburg goal again, but the scorer Bebou was offside, so the goal didn’t count. It remained at 1: 4 – Freiburg celebrated the deserved entry into the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup.
