While ANSES has just published a study on the dangers of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, the municipalities of Viry-Chatillon and Orsay prohibit the sale of it via a decree.

Poisoning, neurological sequelae, the effects of nitrous oxide worry the public authorities. While a bill to prohibit sale to minors was adopted by the Senate, the text is now debated in the National Assembly. In the meantime, some town halls like those of Viry-Chatillon and D’Orsay, in Try, take the lead.

“Easy smashing”
Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, seems to be popularized with young people who appropriate it for its euphoric effects. Cécilia Solal, coordinator of a report on the subject for ANSES (National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety) explains:
It’s easy, cheap, it lasts 30 seconds and young people do not have the impression that ultimately there could be persistent neurological damage.
” Sound the alarm “
Jean-Marie Vilain, mayor of Viry-Chatillon, noted “an increase in the consumption of nitrous oxide” in his town after confinement. “The quantities of cartridges were impressive around the lake where we could find twenty, thirty,” he laments.
By making an order, we want to sound the alarm and show the legislator that there is a real problem. He needs to grab it quickly before it’s too late.
This is why the councilor took the decision to prohibit from July 3, 2020, the sale, possession and consumption of nitrous oxide to minors. The penalty incurred, a fine of 68 euros, is above all a means for the mayor to make merchants aware of the problem. Ditto for Orsay whose mayor, David Ros, took a similar order.

A highly dangerous practice with irreversible effects to be taken seriously! https://t.co/hyjmQT2ZNW– City of Orsay (@Orsaynotreville) July 13, 2020
