‘Trusty pooch’ and dog unit help collar would-be thieves

Dog’s Alert Saves Cars, Leads to Arrest

An alert dog and a police unit collaborated to stop car thieves in an Auckland suburb. A homeowner’s furry friend barked, alerting his owner to suspicious activity, leading to arrests and the thwarting of potential vehicle break-ins.

The Canine’s Heroic Act

Early this morning, a resident in Greenlane was awakened by his dog’s barking. This prompted the owner to investigate, discovering two people outside, apparently inspecting parked cars with a flashlight. Upon police arrival, the suspects fled in a car.

The police helicopter tracked the vehicle, and authorities successfully spiked its tires. The car still continued driving before it was abandoned on Garland Road. The driver then attempted to escape on foot.

A police dog unit was deployed, apprehending the driver nearby. The suspect sustained minor bites from the police dog and received medical attention. The passenger inside the vehicle was also arrested without further issues.

“After a busy night, it’s left two smart dogs catching up on some much-needed sleep,”

Inspector Jim Wilson

In 2024, vehicle theft has risen by 10% across New Zealand, highlighting the importance of vigilance and community support (Statistics NZ).

Legal Consequences

A 38-year-old individual is scheduled to appear in the Auckland District Court. The charges include failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, possession of cannabis, and possession of an offensive weapon. Thankfully, it appears no cars on the street were successfully broken into.

Inspector Wilson praised the collaborative efforts, underlining the value of both canine assistance and swift police response.
