Trump willing to remove Sudan from terror list

It involves compensation for victims and their families of attacks by the al-Qaeda terror group on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, according to Reuters news agency.

Shortly after Trump’s tweet, a response from Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok: “Thank you very much, President Trump”. He says he looks forward to the moment when his country is removed from the list. The place on the terror list has caused a lot of damage to the country.

Foreign support

Sudan has been on the terrorism list since 1993, when the former Sudanese dictator Omar al-Bashir took office. He was impeached last year.

The place on the list of states that support terrorism makes it difficult for the Sudanese interim government to obtain financial support from abroad.

Also North Korea, Iran and Syria are on the list. They have to deal with strict US rules when it comes to financial transactions, arms supplies and aid projects.

Relationship with Israel

The US-Sudan agreement may also have implications for diplomatic relations between Sudan and Israel, Reuters writes. Details on the deal were yet to be worked out.

Although Trump did not mention the relationship between Israel and Sudan in his tweet, diplomatic success would suit him well in view of the US presidential election on Nov. 3.

After Trump’s mediation, a similar deal was struck between Bahrain and Israel. The countries signed an agreement to establish official diplomatic relations.
