Trump announces potential Breakthrough in Gaza, Faces Israeli Opposition
WASHINGTON - Donald Trump has declared “I think we have an agreement” to end the war in Gaza adn secure the release of hostages, though details remain fluid and the plan faces immediate resistance from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. the potential agreement emerged following a meeting of Arab and Muslim leaders who, according to AFP, sought guarantees against the annexation of parts of the West Bank (occupied by Israel since 1967) and any alterations to the legal and ancient status of Jerusalem’s holy sites.
The plan, presented by Washington, reportedly includes a U.S. commitment to prevent further annexation of the West Bank. Trump publicly stated on Thursday, “I will not allow israel to annex the West Bank. No, I will not allow it. It will not happen. […] That’s enough like that. It’s time to stop now.” Arab officials, quoted by Axios, expressed optimism, stating, ”For the first time, we had the feeling that a serious plan was on the table.”
A joint press release from the participating Arab and Muslim countries affirmed their “commitment to cooperate with President Trump and underlined the importance of his leadership to end the war.” American emissary steve Witkoff expressed confidence on Wednesday, predicting a potential “breakthrough” in the coming days.
Though, Netanyahu has already signaled opposition to aspects of the plan. Trump is scheduled to meet with Netanyahu at the White House on Monday to finalize the details. According to Libération, Israel has been accused of economically asphyxiating the West Bank to undermine the legitimacy of the Palestinian Authority.
