US President Donald Trump is on his way to Georgia for the first rally since losing the presidential election to rival Joe Biden. Trump’s presence in the southern state is intended to support two Republican senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. After all, re-elections for the Senate will be organized on 5 January. Before his departure, Trump also called and pressured the Republican governor of the state to rescind Biden’s Georgia election victory. That writes The Washington Post. Perdue and Loeffler were unable to obtain a majority of the votes in November. So now there are re-elections and that puts the Republicans in a difficult position. On the one hand, there is Trump’s claim that massive fraud was committed during the first round in November, while on the other hand, one must call on voters to vote again with the same “unreliable” electoral infrastructure. Not everyone in the Republican Party in Georgia is fond of the president’s rhetoric. Some believe that it can lead to violence.

If the Republicans win one seat on January 5, they will retain the majority in the Senate. If they lose both seats, Vice President Kamala Harris will have the final say and the Senate will be de facto under the control of the Democrats. That makes a world of difference to the new president Joe Biden, who would then have both the Senate and the House of Representatives behind him.

Otherwise – with a Republican majority – the Senate can block its policies.

Trump’s pressure on the governor is yet another attempt to call into question the results of the November election by citing without evidence fraud as the cause of his defeat. Kemp said earlier that he could not be willing to please the president because he did not have the political power to do so. According to The Post’s spokesperson, he has now also rejected Trump’s urgent request.

After a recount also failed to provide Trump with the desired majority in Georgia, his lawyers filed a lawsuit to invalidate the result. This has also happened in other states of the US, so far without success.
