Trump defies UN by demanding to impose all sanctions on Iran

The American Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, visited yesterday the United Nations to make a clear message: “No one can stop us.” Pompeo spent a few hours at the UN headquarters to start the process of claiming the imposition of all sanctions against Iran that are contemplated in the 2015 international agreement for violating the limits of its nuclear program.

Donald Trump advanced the measure on Wednesday and it is the response to the humiliating defeat that US diplomacy suffered last Friday, when the Security Council rejected the US proposal to extend the arms embargo indefinitely to the Iranian regime. The initiative only obtained two votes in favor, his own and that of the Dominican Republic. There were two against, Russia and China, and eleven abstentions, among them three allies, France, Great Britain and Germany.

Trump’s initiative represents a new confrontation within the Security Council

The initiative to recover all the sanctions imposed before the international pact, and then frozen, represents a new confrontation within the Security Council. The credibility of the UN to implement its own resolutions is at stake.

The other countries that forged the international pact with Tehran – the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the European Union as an entity, Russia and China – are resisting the implementation of all sanctions, which include oil trade or banking transactions. Those nations have even revealed their strangeness and have highlighted the impossibility of the Trump administration requesting the application of a mechanism of an international agreement from which it precisely disassociated itself in 2017.

According to Pompeo, the US, as a member of the Security Council with the right to veto (there are four others, France, the United Kingdom, Russia and China) can make that request in order to reimpose the punishment, because the nuclear agreement part precisely of the Council, executive arm of the UN. “We have every expectation that the countries of the world will live up to their obligations,” said Pompeo.

However, without the support of European allies, questions arise as to how Washington can implement such sanctions alone, even though much of international trade has its roots in American financial institutions. In any case, you can take the challenge forward for China and Russia to portray themselves with the use of the veto.
