Ex president United States of America, Donald Trump, made an ambiguous statement about his prediction that China might attack Taiwan in 2022, especially after Olympic Winter is on.
In an interview with a former member of the British parliament, Nigel Farage, Trump alluded to the attitude of the US which he considered allowed China to increase its aggression against Taiwan.
Trump even spoke a little harshly when explaining his opinion about the US position in global geopolitics today.
“I think (the US position) is now at its lowest point ever. I don’t think (the US) has ever been in a position like this. We (US) are not respected anymore,” Trump said.
Trump feels the United States is no longer respected in the world, especially after he stepped down from the White House.
The Republican politician claims this can be seen from the change in China’s behavior towards Taiwan since he left the White House.
“I tell you, there are no foreign planes flying over Taiwan and the name (Taiwan) is never discussed. You didn’t talk about Taiwan when I was president. What is happening now will not happen (when I become president),” he said. Trump as quoted Sputnik on Friday (3/12).
Since President Joe Biden – Trump’s successor – took office in the White House, the US has been seen to be more vocal in supporting Taiwan and has often irritated China.
China is increasingly keen to show its aggressiveness towards Taiwan by holding military exercises near the region and deploying dozens of fighter jets to Taiwan’s air zone.
The Taiwan issue has even become one of the tough topics discussed by Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in a virtual meeting some time ago.
Meanwhile, China still regards Taiwan as a territory of its sovereignty that rebels because it insists on independence.
The US does not have official relations with Taiwan because of the One China policy, in which all countries that have diplomatic relations with Beijing cannot establish official relations with Taipei.
However, the US has an agreement that Washington will continue to assist Taipei, especially on defense matters, under the Taiwan Relations Act.
With this change in China’s attitude towards Taiwan, Trump predicts that Beijing will soon launch military action against Taipei.
“I think (China) might wait until after the Winter Olympics and maybe something will happen. It’s not good if you (in Taiwan if China attacks), and you have bombers flying over your country constantly… constant,” Trump said.
Trump made his wild predictions without concrete evidence and supporting data. However, he claims that his predictions are widely believed by people.
“Many people say I am very good at prediction and business matters,” he explained.
The 2022 Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from February 4-20, 2022.
