Trump Celebrates Robert Mueller’s Death on Truth Social
Former President Donald Trump celebrated the death of Robert Mueller on Saturday, posting on his Truth Social platform that he was “glad” the former FBI director and special counsel had died.
“Robert Mueller just died. Fine, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!” Trump wrote shortly after MS Now reported Mueller’s death at age 81. Mueller had disclosed last year that he was living with Parkinson’s disease.
Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and potential obstruction of justice by Trump cast a long shadow over the first half of Trump’s presidency. While the investigation did not establish a criminal conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, it resulted in numerous indictments and convictions of individuals connected to Trump, including campaign chairman Paul Manafort and political operative Roger Stone, as well as campaign advisor George Papadopoulos. The probe similarly detailed extensive efforts by Russia to influence the election through hacking and disinformation campaigns.
The Mueller report, released in a redacted form in April 2019, outlined numerous contacts between the Trump campaign and individuals with ties to the Russian government. It presented evidence suggesting that Russia viewed Trump’s election as beneficial to its interests. The report detailed ten instances of potential obstruction of justice by Trump, but declined to make a traditional prosecutorial judgment on whether he had committed a crime, citing Department of Justice policy against indicting a sitting president.
Trump consistently attacked Mueller and the investigation as a “witch hunt” and a politically motivated attempt to undermine his presidency. He repeatedly claimed the investigation was based on false information and that Mueller was biased. These attacks continued even after the conclusion of the investigation and Mueller’s subsequent departure from public service.
Trump’s reaction to Mueller’s death echoes previous instances where he has publicly expressed satisfaction over the deaths of perceived political opponents. In December, Trump joked that the death of director Rob Reiner was due to “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” a phrase he frequently uses to dismiss criticism.
The American Constitution Society (ACS) and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) jointly prepared a summary of key findings from the Mueller Report, noting that the investigation uncovered “extensive criminal activity” and that Trump associates “repeatedly lied to investigators.” A statement signed by over 1,000 former federal prosecutors concluded that Trump’s actions to impede the investigation would likely have resulted in obstruction of justice charges against any other American.
As of Saturday evening, the Department of Justice had not issued a statement regarding Mueller’s death.
