Trump between fake news and megalomania

His caricature is not easy to distinguish from his real picture: six meters high Trump balloon in London 2018.

For some it is a demagogue, for the market it mainly meant Trump books, Trump hats and Trump jokes: About the end of a desolate presidency.

EA peculiar mood lies in the American events of the past few weeks. New “breaking news” is constantly rushing in, but hardly any seems to give any clues as to what to expect next, and it was not only since the storm on the Capitol that one could doubt the reliability of one’s own perception. Trump has expanded our reality in ways that we in politics had never thought possible. Because the procedures of parliamentary democracy do not suit him, he bent them like no one before him. Are we dealing with a sleeping monster? A bankrupt upstart challenging a helpless American institutional state? With Götterdämmerung?

We in Europe, who use American media, are also currently experiencing an emotional roller coaster. Many were relieved that Trump would not get a second term, then in disbelief at his stubborn refusal to see the reality, finally upset by his lies. No sooner had the situation calmed down than the horror of the mob attack on the Capitol. Immediately afterwards again amazement at Trump’s very special mixture of denial, precisely dosed lip service and the flight forward. How boring he is when he wants to be statesmanlike! Not to forget our concern about the opposition’s limited options and the moral disgust of a Republican party that is gambling away its last credit. So where are we?
