Trump Announces Presidential Medal of Freedom for Rudy Giuliani
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Former President Donald Trump announced via social media that he will award Rudy Giuliani, his former attorney, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honour. The announcement comes days after Giuliani was hospitalized with injuries sustained in a car crash in New Hampshire.
“An equally great American Patriot, will recieve THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM,our Country’s highest civilian honor,” Trump stated in the post. “Details as to time and place to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
The Presidential Medal of Freedom, established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, recognizes individuals who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United states, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.” The planned award to Giuliani is drawing scrutiny given his recent legal and financial troubles, and also his role in spreading misinformation following the 2020 election.Giuliani, 81, rose to prominence as an aggressive prosecutor in New York City during the 1980s and 90s, and gained national recognition as “America’s mayor” for his leadership following the September 11, 2001 attacks. However, his reputation has been considerably tarnished in recent years.
He was recently disbarred in New York and Washington,D.C., and filed for bankruptcy after being found liable for $148 million for spreading false claims about Georgia election workers. His spokesperson, Ted Goodman, defended the honor, stating, “Mayor Rudy Giuliani took down the Mafia, saved New york City, comforted the nation following 9/11, and served in countless other ways to improve the lives of others.”
Giuliani suffered “fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg” after the vehicle he was in was struck from behind in New Hampshire, according to his spokesperson. No date or location for the medal ceremony has been announced.
