Trump administration formally asks UN to reintroduce sanctions against Iran

The US government made a formal request to the United Nations on Thursday to reintroduce all sanctions against Iran. That reports Reuters news agency. According to President Donald Trump’s administration, Iran should be punished for repeatedly violating the agreements of the 2015 nuclear accord. The United States has not been affiliated with the same agreement since 2018.

The US wants to make use of the so-called snapback clause included in the nuclear accord. The mechanism was devised to be able to reactivate sanctions within thirty days if Iran did not comply with the agreements. In a statement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo argues that, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, the US has the right to invoke the clause despite denouncing the Irandeal. This argument has previously been rejected by the other members of the Security Council such as the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told UN Secretary General António Guterres earlier on Thursday that the imminent US action “has dangerous consequences for international law.” “It will destroy international mechanisms and discredit the Security Council,” said the minister. He calls on the international community to condemn the action.

Urgent debate and disapproval

Russia has now called for an emergency debate with the UN Security Council and France, the United Kingdom and Germany have joined forces statement disclosed not to support the United States initiative. “We remain committed to the nuclear deal despite the major challenges posed by the US withdrawal,” the countries say.

France, the UK and Germany say that “the issue of Iran’s non-compliance” must be resolved through talks between the parties to the nuclear deal. The ‘E3’ also calls on Iran to immediately abide by all agreements from the agreement to prevent the deal from falling apart.

Prevent snapback

It is not yet entirely clear what consequences the American action will have. In principle, other members of the Security Council can pass a resolution to prevent the snapback, but the United States can veto that resolution again. It is feared that a reintroduction of sanctions could lead to the end of the entire nuclear deal.

The fact that Iran is not complying with the agreements in the nuclear accord is beyond dispute. However, the Islamic republic is no longer complying with the rules because the United States has left the deal and has reintroduced severe economic sanctions. The country tries to violate the agreements, pressure to the other countries in the nuclear deal to get the US to cancel the penalties.
