Trudeau: ‘Canada mourns deadliest shooting ever’ | NOW

The death toll from the shooting last weekend in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia has risen to eighteen, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said on Monday. Among the dead is a police officer.

The 51-year-old gunman himself was also killed.

“A shooter has claimed the lives of at least 18 people, including a uniformed woman whose job is to protect lives, even if it puts her own life at risk,” said Trudeau.

“It happened in small towns: Portapique, Truro, Milford and Enfield, places where people have deep roots, places where people know their neighbors and look after each other,” says Trudeau. “Now these communities are mourning and Canada is mourning them.”

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, the shooter started shooting in the Canadian city of Portapique, after which a manhunt of more than twelve hours began. The shooter, who was wearing a police uniform, has killed in multiple locations in Nova Scotia. Residents of the cities were asked to stay indoors during the manhunt.

Canadian police speak of the “deadliest shooting in Canada ever”. The shooter’s motif is still unknown. He would not have known his victims personally and probably chose them randomly. For the time being, no terrorist motive is assumed.
