Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese or Steven Spielberg – they all have the “Gold Remi Award” at home. Now Rudi Dolezal can also look forward to this award. The Purkersdorf filmmaker won the golden statuette for his music video with artist Sir Ivan at the 53rd International Film and Video Festival – the largest independent film festival in the world.
The video for “Get Together” with Look-a-Likes by Jesus, Dalai Lama, Ghandi, Martin Luther King and John Lennon inspired the jury. “The idea of making a video with these personalities came about in discussions with Sir Ivan, for whom peace is very important. I put together a ‘supergroup’ for the video, ”Dolezal says. Since the message of the song was “Peace”, he found Look-A-Likes of what he considered to be the most important personalities who have campaigned for peace and human rights in recent history. “For the first time in music video history, a video with look-a-likes was made, it has never been there before,” says the filmmaker. It also includes quotes from the personalities that fit the topic. “And in the end everyone smokes marijuana together. Of course, that’s a taboo breach in America, ”smiled Dolezal.
Sir Ivan is a top ten artist on the American billboard dance charts. The award-winning video is the third that the filmmaker shot with Sir Ivan.
The Dolezal clip won gold – gold-silver-bronze – out of 4,500 entries from 53 countries in the “Video of the Year” category against strong international competition, especially from the USA and England. “It is a nice confirmation of my work – above all because the jury consisted exclusively of international professionals who know something about the craft,” says Dolezal.
It is also clear that this major award is less due to the quality of the song or the popularity of the artist, who is practically unknown in Europe. “But for an idea that has simply never been implemented in the music business and that I staged for the first time in the USA,” says the filmmaker.
And the jury was impressed. Festival President Hunter Todd emphasizes: “The jury was enthusiastic about this” king’s idea “with the famous look-a-likes of history as symbol symbol, because it perfectly underlines and emphasizes the positive message of the song. This idea is obvious – but Dolezal was the first to implement it in music history. In addition, like most of Dolezal’s works, the clip is top international quality. ”
The only downside is that the major awards show in Houston, which has been traditional for 52 years – a meeting of the international film and video industry every year – has to be canceled due to the corona crisis. Dolezal is still delighted with this prestigious award.
The Purkersdorfer filmmaker lives in early March in the isolation he chose in the USA, which he had decided before the Corona crisis to finish writing his long-awaited book about Queen singer Freddie Mercury (“My Friend Freddie”). “With a very disciplined daily routine,” says Dolezal.
