On the motorways in the Emsland and Osnabrück districts and in the county of Bentheim in Lower Saxony, there is a driving ban for trucks over 7.5 tonnes until 12 noon due to persistent snowfall and ice. Clearance services are still in use on many roads in the state and snow drifts are occurring. Some state and district roads are closed or not passable. Heavy snowfall also temporarily brought traffic to a standstill on the A7 near Göttingen. To the north, a truck standing sideways blocked traffic. Not only for Lower Saxony, but also for Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg is warned of slipperiness. in the northern Schleswig-Holstein, especially in the Schleswig-Flensburg district, there were also snow drifts. In Großsolt several vehicles stuck in a snowdrift, as a police spokeswoman said. In Tarp and Freienwill, snowdrifts were fatal for driving cars and trucks. On the Baltic island of Rügen (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), too, snowdrifts made motorists difficult.

You can find out the current situation on the streets around the clock in the NDR traffic service.

Storm surge warning for the German Baltic Sea coast

A storm surge warning applies to the Baltic Sea coast.

According to the German Meteorological Service (DWD), there can be another 5 to 15 centimeters of fresh snow spread over about eight hours in the Göttingen region and further north. Although the new snowfall in southern Lower Saxony is not as strong as it was on Sunday, the snow that has fallen so far can hardly be cleared as quickly by then. It also remains stormy, especially on the coast. The Hydrodienst Hamburg issued a storm surge warning for the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast, in particular the Bay of Kiel and Lübeck. During the day, water levels would be expected to be one meter above the mean water level. To the west of Rügen, water levels up to 80 centimeters above the mean water level are expected, and to the east of Rügen up to 60 centimeters. In Greifswald and Stralsund, peaks of up to 75 centimeters above the mean water level can occur.

Further massive restrictions in local and long-distance traffic

The Deutsche Bahn Due to the onset of winter, local traffic in Lower Saxony and Bremen largely stopped on Sunday, according to information from Monday, most of the restrictions should remain in place until Tuesday morning. There are no long-distance trains between Hanover and Berlin or between Hanover and Dresden. From Hamburg the connections to Dortmund / Cologne, Hanover, Frankfurt and Munich as well as to Kiel, Lübeck and Westerland have been canceled. In addition, long-distance traffic between Germany and the Netherlands was paralyzed by the weather. The intercity trains between Hanover and Norddeich-Mole as well as between Münster and Norddeich-Mole still do not run. The connections between Hamburg and Berlin would be maintained, said the railway. But there could be failures. Passengers can use the Railway hotline (08000) 99 66 33 inform about the current situation.

At train stations in regions badly affected by the onset of winter, Deutsche Bahn provided stay trains for stranded travelers – for example in Hanover. An easing of the situation is not in sight due to further snowfalls.
