Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman was forced too leave Wednesday’s Champions Cup match against Monterrey in the first half and was later seen on crutches with a full-length knee brace, raising concerns about a potential injury. Rodman exited the game in the 41st minute and headed to the locker room at halftime.
The injury is notably concerning given Rodman’s recent history with back issues and her recent recall to the U.S.Women’s National Team roster. She had only recently returned to consistent form for the Spirit, scoring seven goals in 13 games since addressing her back problem.Wednesday’s victory secured the Spirit’s place in the Champions Cup semifinals, but the focus now shifts to Rodman’s health.
Spirit coach Adrián González stated he had no update beyond the fact that Rodman will undergo scans on Thursday. U.S. head coach Emma Hayes recently expressed excitement about having a “healthy Trin” available, after the forward was sidelined for four months to remedy her back issue.
“I’m super excited to have Trin back with the group — but a healthy Trin I think is the important thing,” Hayes said at a news conference. “When she came in in April, she really felt she was in a good place, but the reality was, I think so much adrenaline got her through that game in L.A., but afterward that reality hit home that there were some issues in her back that were unresolved. … She’s one of the best players in the world, and we’ve had to play without her for more than a year.”
Rodman was recalled to the USWNT roster for the first time since the gold-medal winning effort at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The U.S. is scheduled to play Portugal on oct. 23 and Oct. 26.
