Triathlon: Ironman Hawaii 2020 postponed – two world champions in 2021

In the coming year there will be two triathlon world champions. Due to the corona crisis, this year’s Ironman in Hawaii has been postponed to February 6, 2021. The race was originally scheduled for October 10th. The organizers cited the applicable guidelines in Hawaii and the worldwide travel restrictions due to the pandemic as a reason.

A few days ago, defending champion Jan Frodeno was critical of a year with two world championships: “That makes it a bit silly to have a February world champion and an October world champion,” the 38-year-old told the German press agency. “I think that if a World Cup cannot take place in October, it should simply be suspended.”

At the beginning of April, Frodeno, who holds the record time (7:51:13 hours) at the Ironman in Hawaii, collected more than 200,000 euros in donations with a triathlon in the home office.

Since Sebastian Kienle’s victory in 2014, there have only been German winners in Hawaii after swimming 3.86 kilometers, cycling 180.2 kilometers and running 42.2 kilometers. In 2015, 2016 and 2019 Frodeno triumphed, in between Patrick Lange was first twice. Last year there was even a double victory when Anne Haug became the first German and third fastest woman in history to win the Ironman.

With the new February date, the challenge from a German perspective is now even greater, Lange told the German Press Agency a few days ago: “It is almost impossible to prepare for a hot race in the cold European winter.” To be successful in Hawaii, the training plan would have to be restructured. The planning for the second competition in October would also have to be adjusted accordingly.
