Due to weak demand, Austrian Airlines is thinning out its flight schedule. This also results in a flight that hardly exists in Europe.
So-called triangular flights are a rarity in Europe these days. As a rule, airplanes fly non-stop from A to B and back to A. Connections with intermediate stops – for example from A to B to C and then back to A – are hardly to be found in Europe. Only with some holiday connections it still exists.
With the Corona crisis, such triangular flights are experiencing a small temporary renaissance: Since Monday (September 28), Austrian Airlines, for example, has merged the routes Vienna – Leipzig and Vienna – Nuremberg. The Lufthansa subsidiary now flies them as Vienna – Leipzig – Nuremberg – Vienna. The smallest AUA model is used – the De Havilland Canada Dash 8. Only on Monday was an Embraer E195 used as an exception.
Flight plan thinned out
It is not yet known whether other destinations will also be served by triangular flights in the future. However, the flight schedule has already been reduced to a number of destinations in Germany and Switzerland – specifically to Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne, Munich, Basel and Zurich. Smaller planes are used after Frankfurt and Geneva.
Currently, the flight schedule from Vienna to Larnaca had to be thinned out due to the new restrictions for Cyprus – the flights have not been completely suspended since September 24th despite the de facto entry ban from Austria: “After we have a significant proportion of transfer passengers here who fly with us to the USA, for example, we can continue to operate the route, ”said an AUA spokesman.
