Academic Qualification Simulations Surge as italian Researchers Face ASN 2023-2025 Evaluation
A growing number of Italian university researchers are utilizing simulations based on Iris data adn bibliometric indicators to assess their standing against the thresholds for the abilitazione Scientifica nazionale (ASN) – the national scientific qualification – for the 2023-2025 period. These simulations, like the one offered through a modal window accessible on university platforms, aim to predict outcomes based on scientific production metrics, but come with significant caveats regarding accuracy and potential discrepancies from the final ASN assessment.
The ASN qualification is a mandatory requirement for becoming a full professor in Italian universities. The current evaluation, based on Ministerial Decree 589/2018 and its accompanying Table A,requires researchers to surpass at least two out of three key indicators related to their specific scientific discipline (SC/SSD). simulations utilize data available as of a specific date – and do not account for mandatory leave periods which can provide percentage increases in values during the official ASN application process. Researchers are cautioned that the simulations, developed collaboratively by Cineca, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and the Iris Focus Group, are intended as aids to calculation and carry no guarantee of mirroring the final ASN outcome due to potential cataloging errors, missing data, or fluctuations in bibliometric data. A disclaimer states that the entities involved bear no duty for how individuals utilize the simulation results. The simulation was carried out on the basis of the specifications collected on the Er of the Focus Group Iris table coordinated by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
