Reported Kompas.com, Friday (16/4/2021) the persecution incident occurred on Thursday (15/4/2021), when JT picked up his son who was being treated at Siloam Sriwijaya Hospital, Palembang.

At that time, JT found that her child’s hand was bleeding after the IV needle was removed by the CRS nurse.

Seeing this, JT then called CRS to meet him in the treatment room. CRS then came to the treatment room with several other colleagues.

Before he could explain the incident, the angry JT immediately slapped CRS in the face. Not only that, CRS was also asked to prostrate and apologize.

Having not had time to respond, the victim was kicked again by the perpetrator in the stomach until he was finally separated by another nurse.

Bruising in the eye and swelling of the lips

Head of Sub-Division for Public Relations at the Palembang Police Commissioner M Abdullah said that his party had received the report of the abuse.

Abdullah explained that the police are currently still examining witnesses regarding the incident. Investigators have also received post-mortem results to follow up on the report.

“The perpetrator can be subject to Article 351 regarding persecution. The perpetrator will be examined later for this incident,” said Abdullah.

Hospital Management: Nurse act in accordance with SOPs

Meanwhile, the management of Siloam Sriwijaya Hospital, Palembang, denied that the nurse with the initials CRS, who was a victim of family abuse for the patient, did not work professionally.

President Director of Siloam Sriwijaya Hospital, Palembang, Bona Fernando, said that when he was in charge of caring for the children of JT perpetrators, CRS had worked optimally.

Bona said that CRS had to remove the infusion tube because the child of the JT perpetrator had been declared healthy and could be brought home.

“Our nurses have SOP. Everything is in accordance with the procedure,” said Bona, told reporters, Friday (16/4/2021).

He said the hospital management supported CRS’s steps to take legal action.

Until now, he said, the perpetrators had not shown good faith to apologize for the incident.

“We haven’t done any mediation yet, we leave it completely to the police,” he said.

Bona added that due to the abuse carried out by JT, the CRS nurse not only suffered physical injuries, but was also psychologically shaken.

“Earlier (Friday) afternoon his condition was still being treated because he was indeed injured. We have also prepared a psychiatrist to assist the victim,” said Bona.

Statement of the attitude of the nurse’s union

Following the incident of the persecution, the Central Executive Board (DPP) of the Indonesian National Nurses Association (PPNI) strongly condemned the perpetrator’s actions and will take legal steps against the violence.

This was conveyed by the General Chairperson of the PPNI DPP, Harif Fadhillah, in an official statement received Kompas.com, Friday (16/4/2021) night.

“Violence against nurses who are carrying out their professional duties is a threat to security in the workplace and the health care system,” said Harif.

“PPNI carries out guardianship and assistance for nurses in this case so that it is in accordance with legal corridors and the perpetrator is punished as severely as the applicable law,” he added.

Guarantee of a conducive work environment

According to Harif, this kind of incident had happened several times.

Thus, to prevent similar incidents from recurring, PPNI calls on the government and leaders of health service facilities to ensure a conducive work environment for nurses to carry out their professional duties.

“This includes the aspect of nurses who do not get physical or psychological violence from any party because nurses’ duties are closely related to human safety,” said Harif.
