Travel within Germany: The current Corona rules

At the beginning of October, the federal states had decided on an accommodation ban for holidaymakers from domestic areas with high numbers of corona infections – however, massive criticism followed, and some federal states had already overturned the ban. The proposal was due to be discussed again on October 14, but there was no agreement. Conclusion: The topic was postponed to November 8th, until then the patchwork of the ban on accommodation remains. The German Tourism Association (DRV) expressed disappointment: “It is a bitter setback for Germany as a travel destination that the bans on accommodation in many federal states initially continue to exist,” said Managing Director Norbert Kunz, including among others WORLD reported.

More than every second municipality in Germany has now been declared a risk area. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 251 of 412 rural and urban districts have exceeded the critical limit of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days. 91 municipalities are above an incidence of 100, eight municipalities even have a value of over 200.

The ban on accommodation actually applies nationwide – however, in addition to Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen, Thuringia and Berlin did not participate from the start. The ban also expired on October 16 in Bavaria and on October 19 in Hesse. Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Brandenburg, Thuringia, Saarland, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Schleswig-Holstein and Saxony have already overturned the ban on accommodation.

Only in two federal states are overnight stays in hotels for people from corona risk areas only possible if they can show a negative corona test: Hamburg and Saxony-Anhalt. The test cannot be older than 48 hours. The regulation does not apply to visits to relatives or friends.

The Constitutional Court has overturned the ban on accommodation in Baden-Würteemberg.

The controversial ban on accommodation was overturned last Friday (October 16).

After the entire city had exceeded the critical seven-day incidence of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, all of Berlin is considered a risk area. However, the state itself is against a ban on overnight stays for guests from domestic risk areas. The governing mayor Michael Müller spoke out publicly against such a ban.

The Berlin administrative court has loudly announced the curfew in the capital decided by the Senate because of the corona pandemic IMAGE tipped on Friday (October 16). Accordingly, there are now eleven Berlin bars that had previously submitted an urgent application against the curfew, allowed to be open after 11 p.m.

The ban on accommodation no longer applies in Brandenburg either, the Higher Administrative Court decided after two urgent applications in Berlin-Brandenburg, such as the “daily News“Reported.

The general ban on Corona accommodation does not apply in Bremen. People from risk areas within Germany are also allowed to stay in hotels here.

Overnight guests must confirm in writing that they have not stayed in a domestic risk area in the previous 14 days. Guests from such areas can stay overnight if they present a negative test result, which must not be older than 48 hours. In the event of violations, the owners of accommodation establishments face a fine of 500 to 1000 euros.

In Hamburg there is also a curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., and alcoholic beverages cannot be sold during this period.

Travelers from domestic risk areas are allowed to spend the night in Hessen without having to show a negative Corona test.

After two urgent applications from hotel companies, the ban on accommodation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was overturned by the court.

Entry within Germany is not restricted. There are also no quarantine requirements for German risk areas.

The general ban on overnight stays for guests from domestic risk areas was declared illegal on Thursday (October 15) by the Lower Saxony Higher Administrative Court with immediate effect.

For the time being, there are no accommodation bans for holidaymakers from inner-German corona hotspots. NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) spoke out publicly against such a regulation. For this, however, travelers should note the curfew, which applies in NRW from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The ban on accommodation no longer applies in Rhainland-Palatinate.

Travelers from risk areas who want to spend the night in Saarland no longer have to show a negative corona test.

No quarantine is currently being ordered for travelers from domestic risk areas. From Saturday, October 17th, the ban on accommodation no longer applies here.

Travelers from risk areas are not allowed to spend the night in hotels etc. in Saxony-Anhalt for tourist purposes. However, if the guest can present a negative corona test, entry is permitted.

In Schleswig-Holstein, the ban on accommodation has been repealed.

In Thuringia there are currently no restrictions for domestic German travelers.
