Trapped letters explode in the Netherlands: the police disseminate their photo to alert the population (video)

Two booby-trapped letters exploded on Wednesday without causing casualties on the premises of two companies in the Netherlands, police said it was an extortion attempt.

The letters exploded in a building of the ABN AMRO bank in Amsterdam and in the premises of the Japanese IT service company Ricoh in Kerkade (south). The sender demanded an amount in bitcoins, the famous virtual currency, and threatened to send other letter bombs if payment was not made, the Dutch news agency ANP reported.

“An employee (of ABN AMRO) wanted to open the letter and heard a hissing sound. The employee threw the letter, after which a slight detonation occurred“the police said in a statement.

Fortunately, there were no injuries, but those involved are of course very shocked“Ricoh said in a statement.

Dutch police have already opened an investigation into a series of letters containing explosives sent in December and January to companies in three cities in the Netherlands.

Police said they “took seriously“the possibility that the Wednesday explosions are linked to this previous case.

She warned the public of “pay special attention” with white padded envelopes bearing two stamps and an address printed in plastic, as the letters used in the attacks on Wednesday appeared.
