In a statement released today, Houston police said they identified the body of Monica Roberts, who had been found on Tuesday in the parking lot of an apartment complex.
According to police, the activist died of an unspecified “medical emergency”.
Born in Houston, Mónica Roberts launched the TransGriot blog in 2006 as a forum for black transgender people, having become one of the first platforms to identify transgender homicide victims, using their identity and gender.
“I got tired of seeing them disrespected in death,” he said last year, noting that when you confuse “deliberately a victim with a transsexual”, you are “delaying justice for that transsexual person who was murdered”.
Monica Roberts was also a founding member of the National Transgender Advocacy Coalition.
