Transport Authority admits overcrowding in public transport and “avalanche” of users – News

“There has been overcrowding, we have received complaints,” AMT President João Carvalho said this morning to deputies of the Economy, Innovation, Public Works and Housing commission at the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon.

“This was not to be expected. […] It is a new thing, there were minimal services, suddenly the avalanche of transport users starts ”, he added.

According to that official, AMT, which regulates and supervises the transport sector in Portugal, received 400 complaints regarding public passenger transport, between the state of emergency and the disaster, not only referring to overcrowding, but also regarding security issues and hygiene.

“If we are talking about public safety, in the case of a mask, there are several hundred complaints about people not wearing masks on public transport,” he said.

João Carvalho reiterated, however, that today there is already a 90% public transport offer and that, in the case of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML), demand is still “very low”.

“The mobility and transport system, through what is possible within Intermunicipal Communities (CIM), is gradually responding. […] It is different on the railroad, because it is not possible to get equipment from today to tomorrow ”, defended the president of AMT.

As for the 94 million euros of reinforcement for transport, foreseen in the Supplementary Budget, João Carvalho admitted that he was not sure that it would be enough.
