Train cancellations and longer travel times: Deutsche Bahn is building between Leipzig and Dresden

Rail travelers between Leipzig and Dresden must prepare for timetable changes and replacement services from Friday evening. Commuters in the Meißen district between Riesa and Coswig are also affected. Deutsche Bahn is expanding the section of the Zeithain curved triangle – Leckwitz junction for speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. The expansion has been prepared since last October, and things are really getting started.

By September 21, a track will be technically converted and connected in such a way that all train traffic can run in both directions over this one track for a year and a half.

The following connections are affected:

  • From the evening of September 16 until the evening of September 21, the “Saxonia” regional express between Priestewitz and Riesa will be replaced by buses.
  • The trains of the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn on the Chemnitz – Elsterwerda line will also be replaced by buses between Riesa and Wülknitz.
  • The ICE trains on the Dresden – Frankfurt / Main line are temporarily canceled between Dresden and Leipzig.
  • The IC trains on the Dresden – Cologne line are diverted via Elsterwerda with different travel times and do not stop in Riesa.

Level crossings are being replaced by overpasses

From September 22nd until April 2023, all tourist traffic will be handled via one track on the main line. From 2024, the second track will also be prepared for the higher speeds. In Glaubitz, two previous level crossings will be replaced by railway overpasses. A speed of 200 kilometers per hour is only legally possible with the elimination of the level crossings. At the moment, however, only ICE trains are suitable for the speeds. Double-deck IC and regional express trains can do a maximum of 160 kilometers per hour. From September 28th, the railway will be offering consultation hours for residents at an information point in Glaubitz.

The route via Cossebaude is finished

There is relief for commuters on the left Elbe railway line between Coswig and Dresden via Cossebaude. From September 20, the bus replacement service is to be discontinued and the regional trains on the Dresden – Elsterwerda line will run as planned again. In the past four and a half months, the railway had rehabilitated the six-kilometer stretch between Radebeul-Naundorf and Cossebaude near total closure, including renewing the gravel and tracks. In addition, according to the information, work was carried out on the overhead contact line and the signaling technology. This was necessary in order to be able to control the route from the electronic signal box in Weinböhla.

During the closure, the railway bridge over the Elbe and two smaller bridges were also repaired. An old bridge of the B6 over the railway was demolished, and road traffic is already rolling over the new one. The barrier-free expansion of platform 5 in Coswig with a ramp will take until February 2022, the other four platforms have already been accessible via elevators for several years.
