Tragedy in Cameroon: Eight football fans lost their lives before the Cup of Nations – Football – Apollo.lv – Sports

The crowd erupted at the southern entrance to Olembe Stadium as crowds tried to watch Cameroon’s game against the Comoros, the Cameroon state broadcaster said.

“Eight deaths were recorded – two women [..], four men [..], “one child, and one corpse taken away by relatives,” the Ministry of Health said in a preliminary report.

The African Football Confederation (CAF), which organizes the African Cup of Nations, said it was aware of the incident and that it was “investigating the situation and trying to get more details about what happened”.

The federation said it had sent its secretary-general to “visit supporters at a hospital in Yaounde” and added that he was “in constant contact with the Cameroonian government and the local organizing committee”.

The CAF has decided to limit the number of fans in stadiums due to the spread of Covid-19. Housewives in Cameroon may attend up to 80 percent of the stadium’s capacity, while other matches may be attended by up to 60 percent of the stadium’s capacity. Olembe Stadium has a capacity of 60,000 people.

The Cameroon national football team has already reportedly reached the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations in Yaoundé on Monday after winning the Comoros. In the eighth final, Cameroon beat the Comoros 2: 1 (1: 0).
