Traffic jams are increasing on European roads, long traffic jams at Karawanke …

Today is a red holiday and the prelude to the first black Saturday next week. School holidays also commence in the most important federal states in the south of Germany. For the time being it is less busy than last year, except for the Karawankentunnel between Austria and Slovenia, where there are border controls and road works that cause long traffic jams. You have been losing there for more than 3 hours now. VAB recommends driving on the A2 in Italy (Udine and Trieste).

France

In France there is heavy traffic on the Autoroute du Soleil, but the delays are a lot less than last year.

Direction South

Via Luxembourg and Lyon to Spain: + 80 minutes in total

Via Lille, Paris and Bordeaux to Spain: +45 minutes in total

You don’t have to join the Mont Blanc tunnel to Italy at the moment (last year it was 40 minutes).

North there are no major delays yet.

Germany

In Germany, the time loss on the major north-south axes has increased sharply in the past hour. You lose less than half an hour in most places. But on the A8 Karlsruhe – Stuttgart – Ulm, it is more than an extra hour. On the A1, A7 Bremen – Hamburg – Flensburg (towards Denmark) you have to count on 50 minutes extra. A3, A9, A99, A8 Würzburg – Nuremberg – Munich – Salzburg (Austria) is 30 minutes extra.

Austria

In Austria, the waiting time at the Karawankentunnel has increased sharply, as predicted. You currently lose 2 hours 45 minutes there. VAB recommends driving via Italy: from Villach, take the A2 via Udine and Trieste.

Switzerland

The waiting time for the Gotthard tunnel in Switzerland to Italy is currently 30 minutes (last year it was currently 1 hour 30 minutes). Also for the alternative route via the San Bernardino tunnel you have to take an extra 30 minutes into account.
