TPP and CHPP can temporarily switch to gas due to coal shortage – Ministry of Energy of Ukraine

It is noted that TPPs and CHPPs will use gas to generate electricity “in the event and only for the period of a possible lack of sufficient coal reserves in the warehouses of producers whose main design fuel is coal.”

“This does not mean that we are converting all our TPPs and CHPPs to gas. The mechanism that will be implemented assumes the use of gas only for the volume of generating capacities that may not be enough at a certain moment,” explained First Deputy Energy Minister Yuriy Vlasenko. We do not want to admit the situation that existed last year, when Centrenergo used gas to generate electricity and did not have the funds to pay for the supplied volumes, because the appropriate mechanism was not envisaged. “

At the same time, the Ministry of Energy stressed that the accumulation of coal in warehouses continues. So, in December, it is expected about 1.95 million tons of supplies of Ukrainian and imported coal in general. At the same time, the planned consumption is expected to be about 1.7 million tons.

Context:

Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine Maksim Nemchinov on October 15 warned that for the passage of the heating season in Ukraine additional coal to be supplied… According to him, Ukraine has contracts for the import of coal for $ 4 million, contracts for another $ 2 million are expected before the end of the heating season.

On October 30, the Ministry of Energy reported that Ukraine will import coal from Poland, Kazakhstan and South Africa, Ukrainian companies have already signed the necessary contracts.

The head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko on November 5 assured that Ukraine will be able to calmly go through the heating perioddespite the fact that the Russian Federation stops supplies of thermal coal to Ukraine and creates artificial obstacles for Ukraine’s import of coal from Kazakhstan.

On the evening of November 15, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy published a video message in which he promised that there will be no shortage of coal in Ukraine, and “the state will not leave anyone without light and heat”… He mentioned, in particular, that “apart from our Ukrainian coal, there will be seven Panamax ships, which are already sailing and will arrive at Ukrainian ports in the near future.”

On the same evening, the private company DTEK Rinat Akhmetov reported that chartered seven ships with coal to provide Ukrainian thermal power plants with fuel. “President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted the company’s efforts to prepare for the heating season and provide coal in difficult conditions,” the press release said.

Edition “Commander-in-Chief” citing data from the Ministry of Energy, it wrote that the actual reserves of coal at three state-owned TPPs “Centrenergo” as of November 22 amounted to 77.1 thousand tons – 2.2 times lower permissible guaranteed volume.

As of December 13, until data “Ukrenergo”, coal reserves in TPP warehouses amounted to 459.4 thousand tons. December 6 coal reserves made up 414.9 thousand tons.

To replenish warehouses, Ukraine will monthly import from six to 10 ships of coal by sea, said the deputy head of the President’s Office Rostislav Shurma. According to him, by the end of the year, the warehouses will have at least 800 thousand tons of coal.
