First ‘Toy Story 5‘ Trailer Hints at a Tech-Driven Threat to Playtime
The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 has arrived, offering a first look at the highly anticipated sequel slated for release next summer. The trailer introduces lilypad, a new smart tablet character voiced by Greta Lee, and warns that “the age of toys is over,” signaling a potential shift in the beloved franchise.
The fifth installment in the Toy Story series-which has generated $3.3 billion worldwide-finds Woody, Buzz, and the gang facing a new challenge: the integration of modern technology into playtime. Co-directors Andrew Stanton (known for Finding Nemo and Wall-E) and McKenna Harris, making her directorial debut, have described the film’s tone as “playfully antagonistic.”
Returning voice actors include Tom Hanks,Tim Allen,and Joan Cusack. New additions to the cast feature Conan O’Brien as Smarty Pants, a toilet training tech assistant, and Ernie Hudson taking over the role of Combat carl following the passing of Carl Weathers in 2023.
toy Story 5 marks the first film in the franchise not directed by John lasseter, who departed Pixar in 2018 following allegations of sexual misconduct. The release follows a challenging period for Pixar, with recent films Elio and Lightyear underperforming at the box office. Elio recorded the company’s worst opening weekend, while Lightyear reportedly lost Disney $106 million.
Toy Story 5 is scheduled for release next summer alongside other sequels including The Devil Wears Prada 2,Mortal Kombat II,Scary Movie 6,Minions 3,and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
