Tourist arrested in Hawaii after posting photos on Instagram

Believed to be in quarantine, a tourist from New York was arrested in Hawaii after posting a photo of the beach on Instagram.

The 23-year-old was arrested for violating the 14-day quarantine imposed by the island state, according to CNN citing a report from the governor.

Since arriving in O’ahu on Monday, the individual has posted several photos of him at the beach on his Instagram account. He also allegedly used public transport to get to the various places where he photographed himself.

“The authorities became aware of his publications on social networks thanks to citizens who saw them”, it is written in the report.

Since the start of the pandemic, Hawaii has recorded 638 cases of COVID-19, including 17 deaths related to the disease.

To curb the spread, the state is asking travelers to complete a form acknowledging that it is a criminal act to violate quarantine. Offenders face fines of $ 5,000 and one year in jail.

The quarantine order has been extended until the end of June, Governor David Ige said.

Numerous travelers, including honeymooning couples, have been arrested for ignoring the state’s voluntary isolation guidelines.
