Tourism balance shows: Significantly fewer overnight stays in Freiburg

Decline of almost 38 percent in the hotel and hospitality industry due to Corona

In 2020 there were significantly fewer overnight stays in Freiburg than in previous years, namely just over a million – a decrease of almost 38 percent and the lowest value since 2007. This is evident from the tourism balance published today. The reason is the corona pandemic. The Freiburg Wirtschaft Touristik und Messe (FWTM) is now planning a second restart campaign in spring and an accommodation concept to support hotels and restaurants and to attract guests from inland, Alsace and northern Switzerland.

So few overnight stays as last in 2007 mean a dramatic decline in the number of overnight stays in the Breisgau metropolis. Almost no guests from abroad, no trade fair visitors and hardly any business travelers – all of that clouded the balance sheet. In the past few years the number of overnight stays in Freiburg has risen steadily.

From the record year to the crisis year

In 2019, the city reported a record with 1.8 million overnight stays – and the trend is rising. The coronavirus and the associated lockdowns have put an abrupt end to this development. The number of overnight stays has fallen by almost 38 percent, the bed occupancy was only 35 percent. The hotels and restaurants suffered particularly from the cancellation of all events and trade fairs. In the future, too, it is to be expected that congresses and conferences will primarily take place online. Here, however, there is also an opportunity for Freiburg, as the city is more likely to be selected as a venue for smaller congresses than large metropolises, according to the FWTM.
