Toshihiro Nagoshi (Yakuza) on Ghost of Tsushima: “I think such a game should be made in Japan” – News

Posted on July 17, 2020 on PS4, Ghost of Tsushima particularly caught the attention of Toshihiro Nagoshi, creative director at Sega behind the Yakuza series.

Sucker Punch’s latest creation, starring samurai Jin Sakai, recently received praise from Toshihiro Nagoshi during a broadcast of a livestream SEGA. “There are many things that I bow to, like the goal of making a game during this time … I could go on and on“, he begins by declaring, underlining a work”well doneHe adds with a smile:

To be honest, we (in Japan) were beaten. Yes, we are losing. Honestly, I think such a game should be made in Japan.

Another aspect highlighted by the director of Yakuza, the approach “technique“by Sucker Punch illustrated with Kurosawa mode, which applies a monochrome filter, grain effect and new sound work to the game, paying homage to classics by Japanese artist Akira Kurosawa (Rashōmon, The Seven Samurai).

Nagoshi also praised the treatment of protagonist Jin Sakai, seen as an unconventional leader who he said probably wouldn’t have been viewed the same in a Japanese studio.

The protagonist is not a particularly attractive leader, is he? In a typical Japanese business, if you show concept art for a character like him, I don’t think it would be approved.

All that money and development time is spent on this mature dude.

Ghost of Tsushima is available on PlayStation 4.
