Thiruvananthapuram∙ Defendant’s Angry Protest in Court After Verdict in Murder Case of Foreign Woman. Many people gathered to hear the court pronounce its sentence. Relatives of the accused also attended the sentence. After finding them guilty, the court asked the defendant: “Do you know that the maximum penalty for the crime you have committed is hanging?”. The defendant, who claimed to feel guilty, later stated that he had not committed the crime and asked for the sentence to be reduced as much as possible in view of their age.
The defendants repeated it yesterday when the sentence was pronounced. One of the defendants said he should be prepared to conduct a lie test in the case. A yoga instructor fled the scene. He is bilingual. He has not been investigated. It was also requested to examine the hair taken from the murdered woman’s corpse. Noting that this is a rare case, the court also said that the country’s image has been tarnished by this incident.
This is the first time that a foreign tourist from another country has been brutally murdered in Kerala. The ruling also upheld the prosecution’s argument that the defendant should be given the maximum penalty in view of the nature of the offence. As soon as the double life sentence was passed, the defendant went crazy in the courtroom. Both angrily demanded not to be punished. He repeated what he said before.
The victim was tortured several times
Before being killed, the foreigner was raped four times by the defendant. The defendant confessed that the young woman was in their custody for seven hours and that Umesh trapped the young woman walking from Kovalam beach to the auditorium of the temple located in the Vazhamutta mangroves by posing as a tour guide. Together with her friend Udayan, the young woman was drugged, taken to the forest and brutally tortured.
The young woman regained consciousness in the evening and was strangled as she tried to escape from the mangrove. The corpse was tied to a nearby tree using a wild vine to make it look like suicide. In the following days, the defendants went to the scene and observed the body. A few days later, the vine rotted and the body fell apart. The head has been cut off.
Umesh was charged in 13 cases including drugs and assault and Udayan in six cases. There are also reports that women and boys have been sexually assaulted. Some of his victims took the police to Umesh. Both had been drug addicts for years. Their resort was the Wazhmutte mangroves.
