Dr. Alan G. Greenwald Celebrates 25 Years of Service with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery
Great Falls, MT – Alan G. Greenwald, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at the Great Falls Clinic and Hospital, has been recognized for his 25 years of volunteer service to the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). His dedication has significantly contributed to the certification process for orthopedic surgeons nationwide.
Dr. GreenwaldS roles included serving as an ABOS Oral Examiner, Oral Examination Case Selector, and Question Writer. He collaborated with other leading surgeons to evaluate candidates seeking ABOS Board certification and contributed questions to the ABOS Web-Based Longitudinal Assessment.

The Path to Board Certification
Achieving ABOS Board Certification is a rigorous process. Dr. Greenwald first completed a five-year residency program in orthopedic surgery, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Following this, he passed the ABOS Part I Examination, a comprehensive computer-based test covering all aspects of orthopedic surgery.
The process continues with a thorough evaluation of clinical competence. This involves a credentialing process and the ABOS Part II Oral Examination. Candidates must provide a Case List of all surgeries performed over a six-month period, from which experienced surgeons select 12 cases for the oral examination.
Specific skills evaluated during the oral examination include:

- Patient outcomes
- Applied orthopedic and medical knowledge
Maintaining Certification
After successfully completing both the written and oral examinations, Dr. Greenwald achieved ABOS Board Certification in Orthopedic Surgery and is now a Diplomate of the ABOS. Maintaining this certification requires ongoing commitment.
