Top-level match: Bayern Munich versus VfL Wolfsburg

Status: 03/23/2023 10:30 a.m

Bayern Munich’s footballers welcome VfL Wolfsburg to the top game in the women’s Bundesliga on Saturday. The summit meeting is not only a signpost in the title race. The data analysis also shows what an outstanding role the teams in Germany play.

by Florian Neuhauss

For the past ten years, the German champions have either come from Wolfsburg (seven times) or Munich (three times). VfL and FCB got serious about “women’s football” and left the former greats Frankfurt and Potsdam behind. And while the 1. FFC has long since become part of the Frankfurt Eintracht and the Turbine will almost certainly be relegated, the “wolves” and the Bavarians will be fighting for the title again this year.

On Saturday (5.55 p.m., live on the first and on NDR.de) the Wolfsburg women are guests in Munich. Much more is not possible in German women’s football. A look at the data from GSN also shows this: Wolfsburg has the best offensive in the league and the most expected goals, Bayern the best defense and the most expected points. And the two top clubs are also in the lead in almost all other relevant statistics.

Will there be a preliminary decision in the championship race? The top game of the women’s Bundesliga from 5.55 p.m. in the video live stream. more

If the game were to take place in Wolfsburg, the matter would actually be clear – Munich have not won against Lower Saxony for almost 15 years. At home, their result looks much better: In the last ten meetings, FCB have won six times and lost only twice. With a win, FCB would take the lead in the table.

The best 18 players play for VfL and FCB

This dominance is not surprising: According to the performance score (not only German players), there are just three players from other clubs among the top 25 players in the Bundesliga. With the Frankfurt women Sjoeke Nüsken and Laura Freigang (shared 20th place) there are also two Germans. Austria’s Katharina Naschenweng (47.87 / Hoffenheim) is in 19th place. In other words: the best 18 players of the current season all play in Wolfsburg or Munich.

With a performance score of 52.61, Felicitas Rauch from Wolfsburg is currently leading the ranking – followed by Marina Hegering (51.86/Wolfsburg), who will be a guest at the NDR Sportclub on Sunday from 10:30 p.m., and Carolin Simon (51, 36/Bavaria).

There are also clear quality differences in the top 25: Nüsken and Freigang both only get 47.62. However, the women from Wolfsburg, Lena Oberdorf, Lena Lattwein and Kathrin Hendrich, shared 24th place and only had a score of 47.37.

DFB-Elf in Wolfsburg and Munich hands

The supremacy of Wolfsburg and Bayern in the league is also reflected in the national team. In last year’s European Championship final against England in London, Sara Däbritz (then Paris, now Lyon) was the only player in the starting XI who wasn’t under contract in Wolfsburg or Munich. National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg called up 14 players from VfL and FCB to her 26-man squad for the international match against Sweden in February. With nine players, Wolfsburg had by far the largest group. There were also three women from Munich and one from Wolfsburg who were nominated on demand.

This season, however, players from other clubs who are not (yet) national players are also drawing attention to themselves. Shekiera Martinez from Eintracht, for example. The 21-year-old striker has not only scored five goals, with 1.17 goals per 90 minutes she is also the most accurate Bundesliga player. Cora Zickai from SC Freiburg has 0.78 assists, 15 won tackles and nine tackles (5.7 of them successful) in 90 minutes, with several top values.

Also worth mentioning are Leonie Köster from Frankfurt (most shots) and Carlotta Wamser (most dribbles). Michaela Specht from TSG Hoffenheim is the league’s passing machine. Duisburg’s Dörthe Hoppius leads the most duels and header duels. Essen’s Jacqueline Meißner intercepts the most balls in the league.

In the end, will Popp and Pajor decide again?

When it comes to really relevant statistics, Bayern and Wolfsburg are also ahead of the individual protagonists. Bayern’s success is closely linked to Simon’s 1.68 key passes per 90 minutes. Or with Klara Bühl’s 0.72 expected assists per game. Lea Schüller (nine goals), Linda Dallmann and Bühl also occupy third, fourth and sixth place in the scorer list with eleven and two times ten points.

The Wolfsburg women deliver the top values for goals and assists: Svenja Huth has the most crosses (5.2) and has also provided the most assists with seven. The VfL center forward leads with twelve goals Alexandra pops up the list of goalscorers. In addition, the national team captain is also at the top of the scorer list thanks to her three assists.

And not least because Ewa Pajor, who also leads the corresponding ranking with 1.6 scorer points per 90 minutes, like Popp has 15 scorer points (nine goals/six assists) on her account, the match on Saturday in Munich promises to be exciting. A top game – and at the highest level.
