Tool created in Puerto Rico to monitor symptoms of Covid-19 in real time

In search of more data on the coronavirus pandemic in Puerto Rico, a collaboration of the Public Health Trust and Ponce Health Sciences University created a web platform to keep track of the symptoms of this disease around the island.

Through an anonymous survey, people are expected to record whether they have experienced Covid-19 symptoms that are dry cough, fever, and respiratory distress. Although they could also develop other symptoms.

The platform is available by entering the page of https://www.covid19puertorico.com/

According to epidemiologist Melissa Marzán, one of the creators of the initiative, citizen participation is important in this tool, since “it works to the extent that people can report it.” Therefore, people are encouraged to enter to report symptoms.

As part of the brief questions, people are asked to report whether in the “last 24 hours they had any of the symptoms associated with Covid, this to estimate the prevalence of symptoms during the quarantine period.”

They are expected to report results at least weekly.

“In the event of an emergency, one of the tools out there is the syndromic surveillance system and through that tool we can have a clear idea of what is happening to the communities,” said Marzán in an interview with Metro.
