Tony Fernandes: This is a challenge, we will rise again Page all

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The global aviation industry has been sluggish due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However AirAsia The Group believes it can bounce back through its business line innovation.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) noted that at least in April 2020 air travel fell 98 percent over the same period last year, as countries closed their borders.

Airline losses around the world are estimated to reach US $ 84 billion or around Rp.1,192 trillion in 2020. IATA predicts that the aviation industry crisis will only recover until 2024.

Responding to these pressures, the AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes said that this is a challenge in the world of aviation. He believes AirAsia will be able to survive the pandemic.

“This is a challenge for the airline business, but we will bounce back. We will continue to try to deal with it,” he said in a deep voice roundtable media virtually, Tuesday (14/10/2020).

In facing this challenge, AirAsia has carried out various innovations ranging from expanding domestic flights, cargo, food delivery, to the akikah meat trade.

Most recently, this Malaysian airline launched a digital platform airasia.com, super applications (super apps) ASEAN which includes platform travel, e-commerce, and technology finance (fintech).

“I want to thank the team who worked hard, partner and also consumers. We have created super apps ASEAN and are very interested in seeing its future developments, “said Tony.

He said that optimism for future improvements in the company’s performance will be supported by a lot platform digital airasia.com. This is because during the pandemic, digital business is able to grow rapidly.

During post-pandemic recovery, digital business will also grow, as air travel returns to normal. This is considered to be able to encourage the company’s performance from the digital and aviation business.

“It’s interesting, we know that at that time lockdown, the entire digital business is growing rapidly. When time is gone lockdown, the digital business will continue to grow, and the aviation industry will also grow rapidly, “he said

“So we sometimes have to take risks in life. And I hope that both AirAsia and airasia.com will remain the choice of consumers in the future,” continued Tony.

Focus on domestic flights is a must at this time. The pilot industry continues to strive to be able to implement health protocols as precisely as possible in operations.

“We apply health protocols and continue to coordinate with government authorities to ensure the safety of passengers while traveling. The airline industry is trying everything it can,” he said.

On the other hand, continuous innovation is still carried out, namely through super apps airasia.com, to encourage companies to survive the pressure caused by the pandemic. As well as an effort to improve service to consumers.

In Indonesia, super apps with the target to meet the needs of travel and daily lifestyle, have just started through flight services, fly beyond, hotels, snap, activities and Big loyalty.
