Tony Blair Gaza Authority Talks Amidst Israel-Palestine Conflict

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Tony Blair ‍Reportedly Considered for ⁢role in Post-Conflict Gaza Governance

Discussions are underway regarding a potential role for former British Prime Minister⁣ Tony Blair in a transitional authority for Gaza, following the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Reports surfaced after Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas stated on Thursday he is prepared to collaborate with former US President Trump and other international leaders to pursue a two-state peace plan. Abbas explicitly rejected any ‌future governance role for Hamas in gaza, calling for the group’s disarmament.

Blair’s potential involvement comes after he attended a White House meeting with Trump ⁤in August to discuss plans⁤ for Gaza, described by US Middle‍ East envoy Steve Witkoff as‌ “very complete,” ‌though details remain limited.

Prior to this, Blair‌ served ⁢as the Middle East envoy for the Quartet – comprised of the US, EU, Russia,‌ and the UN – ⁢after leaving office in 2007.His focus during that period was on fostering economic ⁣development within Palestine and establishing conditions conducive to‍ a two-state solution.

The consideration of Blair’s role is⁢ occurring amidst heightened international scrutiny of the conflict. Earlier this week, the UK formally recognized the state of palestine, joining France,Canada,Australia, and other‌ nations. This move was criticized‍ by both Israel and the US,‍ who ⁢labeled it a “reward for Hamas.”

The⁤ current military campaign in Gaza was launched by Israel in response ⁤to ‌the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages.

Since then, the Hamas-run health ministry in ‌Gaza reports at least 65,419 Palestinians⁤ have ⁢been killed in Israeli attacks. A UN commission of inquiry has accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in ⁤Gaza, allegations Israel vehemently denies.

It is indeed worth noting that Blair’s decision to commit British forces to the 2003 iraq War was subject to significant criticism, and a subsequent official inquiry found he acted on flawed intelligence regarding the existence of weapons of mass destruction.
