Toni Greblă, elected PRESIDENT of the Permanent Electoral Authority

Supported by the PSD, the UDMR and the national minorities, Toni Greblă was voted by the assembled plenary of the Parliament in the position of president of the Permanent Electoral Authority.

His mandate spans eight years, until 2031.

251 votes in favor of Toni Greblă

Toni Greblă had 251 votes in his favor, 110 MPs voting against.

During the debates, USR senator Radu Mihail declared that “PSD is preparing to capture the most important institution for the elections for democracy in Romania, with the hand of the PNL. Once again, for I don’t know how many times, PNL shows us and shows Romanians that it is nothing but an insignificant accessory to PSD. PNL is PSD’s key ring, because it is preparing to give a vote, today, to a PSD politruc”.

For his part, Ludovic Orban, the leader of Forța Dreptei, criticized AEP for not organizing elections in localities that no longer have mayors.

I am addressing especially those who were my colleagues and who were with me in the campaign, saying from morning to night: “Vote PNL! Get rid of PSD»! In Romania, we are dealing with a state captured almost entirely by PSD representatives, from the Constitutional Court, to the Court of Accounts, from the Legislative Council, led by the former PSD colleague who slaughtered the Penal Codes, the Justice laws (…) until to the People’s Advocate, from ANRE to ANCOMOrban said.

Toni Greblă, the PSD, UDMR and national minorities proposal, Cristian Preda, from USR, and Iulia Andreea Băbeanu, from AUR entered the race for the post of president of the Permanent Electoral Authority.

The promise made by Marcel Ciolacu

The leadership of the Parliament decided, on March 7, to resume the procedure regarding the election of the AEP president.

Asked then if the social democrats still support Toni Greblă for the leadership of this institution, Marcel Ciolacu answered: “Toni Greblă was heard in Parliament, he was passed, he is on the voting list. I can’t take someone’s right”.

On March 15, USR announced that it was putting Cristian Preda, professor of political science and dean of the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Bucharest, in the fight for the position of president of the Permanent Electoral Authority.
