Tokyo Olympics. The giant rings reinstalled. Sport

A giant set of rings olympic, which was undergoing maintenance, returned to the seafront on Tuesday at Tokyo where local officials hope the symbol will reignite enthusiasm for the Games postponed until next summer due to the coronavirus.

Promising vaccine trials have bolstered Tokyo’s hopes of finally hosting the Olympics, which is now slated to open on July 23, 2021 after an unprecedented postponement to March linked to the pandemic.

Relaunch the craze

The 69-ton colored rings were installed in Odaiba Bay earlier this year, when the city began the final Olympics countdown, but they were removed and towed in August for maintenance and inspection.

They came back on Tuesday with a new coat of paint and there are plans to light them up at night. “We are working very hard to organize an Olympic Games where people will feel safe”Tokyo city official Atsushi Yanashimizu told reporters.

“With the installation of the Olympic symbol, we would like more people to feel that the event is approaching and rejoice”, he said.

One in four Japanese want the Olympics in 2021

A July poll showed that only one in four people in Japan wanted the Olympics to take place in 2021, with most respondents in favor of a further postponement or cancellation.

Sponsors are also said to be worried, with Tokyo-2020 organizers not knowing how many of them will be extending their contracts.

Olympic and Japanese officials said they remain committed to hosting the Games next year and International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, said in Tokyo last month that he was “Very, very confident” on the presence of spectators at the Olympics.

The rings will remain in place until the end of the Olympics, then will be replaced by the Paralympic Games symbol in mid-August.
