Tokyo installs TRANSPARENT public toilets: here’s why

During the month of August, the city of Tokyo installed new public toilets in its streets… All are transparent and become opaque once someone is inside.

The new public toilets installed in the streets of Tokyo are equipped with smart and colored glass. Transparent when no one is there, they become opaque once the person who wishes to use them locks the door.

A dozen renowned designers in Japan collaborated on this project. Cabins have been installed at five locations in the capital this spring, there should be twelve more.

But why make the toilet transparent? This installation is part of the “Tokyo Toilet” project of the Nippon Foundation association. The latter explains: “There are two issues with public toilets, especially those located in parks. The first is whether they are clean inside and the second is to make sure that no one is secretly waiting inside.“The association therefore considers that these two problems are solved with this new technology.
