“Today we need you”: Chilean Actresses Network launches campaign to help unemployed colleagues | Arts and culture

“Today we need you”, is the name of the solidarity campaign that the Chilean Actresses Network (Rach) launched with the aim of helping interpreters who have not been able to work in these months of health crisis.

“The performing arts and the audiovisual world have been part of the most vulnerable sectors”, reads a statement released by the collective.

“The theaters were the first spaces to close their doors to the public and they will be among the last to function again. Thus, thousands of workers were left without the possibility of exercising their trades. The lack of contracts, social insurance, labor rights that have always existed in the area, has left thousands in the most complete economic abandonment ”, they detail.

In their diagnosis, they also do not believe that the government aid dedicated to the sector has contributed, which they describe as “ineffective efforts of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, which decided to make the minimum support that they made available competitive, forcing the and artists to compete with each other ”.

For these reasons, the Network of Chilean Actresses (which groups about 400 artists throughout the country) began in March to work on a solidarity fund to support the members with the greatest need.

Today, five months after the health crisis, “There are many more actresses who require help”they argue. For this reason, in this fifth version of the fund, they opened the possibility of collaboration to the entire local community, in a campaign that was baptized as “Today we need you.”

Gabriela Arancibia, an actress from RACH and one of the fund’s organizers, says: “We quickly realized that the outlook was coming very hard for the sector – already precarious – and especially for the women who work in it, even more precarious.”

“Many are single mothers, heads of households, and not all have a support network or qualify for government funds. We have been supporting each other since March, each and every one contributing from their reality. But at this point the economic blow is getting worse and worse and in the face of this abandonment, we must contain ourselves between all of us, “he added.

Paulina Garcia, RACH actress and one of the organizers in this campaign, points out: “Culture has been the emotional support of many and many in these months of confinement. We have been accompanying them with our work on series, movies and soap operas made before the crisis; even in works recorded or delivered by zoom. That is why we dare to ask for a hand return for our most needy colleagues ”.

“We want to appeal to the affection of all that public that has always enjoyed our company in the theater, in the cinema and on television. This time we need them in support of many ”, he says. Carmina Irrigation, another of the organizers.

Until September 4, the Rach will be receiving monetary contributions in the following bank account: Rut Banco Estado account: 17041540; Nicolle Romero Jarufe;
