City tunnel passage sealed for three weeks – three replacement bus lines

Frankfurt -Anyone who wants to travel in or through Frankfurt by S-Bahn from today and during the Easter holidays should better use the timetable information, for example via the RMV app. Because from March 31, 9 p.m. until 4 a.m. on April 24, the passage through the city tunnel will be closed due to construction work, the main artery of local traffic in Rhein-Main. And the route of the S6 between Frankfurt-West and Karben will remain closed for two weeks.

All S-Bahn passengers are affected by the fact that the lines are interrupted for three weeks: not a single S-Bahn runs between Hauptwache and Offenbach-Ost and Südbahnhof, because in the tunnel the train is exchanging tracks and switches on a large scale. From the west, the S1, S2 and S9 run to the Hauptwache, the trains on lines S3 to S5 end at the main station. From the east, S1 and S2 end in Offenbach-Ost. Only the S8 runs continuously, but it takes a detour between the stadium and Offenbach-Ost via Frankfurt-Südbahnhof and Offenbach-Hauptbahnhof. Some journeys on the S1 are also diverted between Frankfurt main station and Offenbach-Ost with a stop in Frankfurt-Süd.

Buses and shuttle train to Friedberg instead of S6

As a replacement, three SEV bus lines are on the move: SEV1 between the airport and Offenbach-Ost via Südbahnhof, Mühlberg and Kaiserlei, SEV2 between Südbahnhof and Offenbach-Ost via Mühlberg and Kaiserlei, and SEV3 between Konstablerwache and Offenbach-Ost via Frankfurt-Ostbahnhof and Kaiserlei. In addition, the Frankfurt public transport company is increasing the offer: Many underground trains run with more cars, the U4 runs more frequently in the off-peak hours. The range of trams 15 and 16 from Offenbach’s city limits via Mühlberg and the Südbahnhof to the main station will also be increased. Articulated buses run continuously on lines 61 (Südbahnhof-Flughafen) and M34 (Bornheim-Gallus).

The expansion of the Main-Weser-Bahn between Frankfurt-West and Groß-Karben will probably result in a complete closure for the penultimate time. From midnight (April 1st) until the early morning of April 18th there is no S6. Regional trains and ICEs will be diverted. They stop at Süd- instead of Hauptbahnhof, many regional trains also start and end in Süd.

As a replacement for the S6 on the Frankfurt-Friedberg route, Deutsche Bahn offers an hourly diesel shuttle train on weekdays that runs via Bad Homburg and Friedrichsdorf. The stations along the S6 route are again served by buses every half hour, and every 60 minutes at night. An express line S6X rolls from Groß-Karben via Dortelweil, Bad Vilbel and Konstablerwache to the main station. Line S6E runs from Groß-Karben via Dortelweil, Bad Vilbel, Berkersheim Mitte, Preungesheim subway (connection to Frankfurter Berg and Harheim with extended bus line 25), Hügelstraße (Eschersheim can be reached by subway) and Bockenheimer Warte to Westbahnhof.

In addition, passengers can switch to rental bicycles. At many affected S-Bahn stations, Nextbike and “Call a Bike” offer their bikes free of charge for the first 30 minutes. Dennis Pfeiffer-Goldman
