windows 11 Installation Now Allows Custom User Folder Names Via Command Line

Microsoft is ⁣testing a feature that allows users to⁣ manually set the name of their user ⁤folder during Windows 11⁣ installation,addressing‌ a long-standing frustration with automatically generated⁤ folder ⁣names. Previously, Windows 11 required a Microsoft account sign-in during setup adn ⁤assigned a ⁤user folder name – often tied to ⁤the user’s email address⁤ – that couldn’t be customized. while workarounds existed to bypass the Microsoft account requirement, controlling⁣ the folder name remained elusive.

The⁣ new⁣ functionality,currently ⁤available in Windows 11 Insider⁣ Preview builds⁤ 26120.6772 and 26220.6772 (Beta ⁢and⁣ Dev channels), enables users to define the folder name using ‍a command-line ⁢interface. This addresses concerns about⁣ potentially unwieldy or undesirable‍ folder‍ names ⁣created by the installer.

To utilize the feature:

* During ⁣the Microsoft ⁣account sign-in page ‌of the initial system setup wizard,⁣ press Shift+F10 to open the Command Prompt.
* Type cd ⁣oobe and press⁢ Enter.
* ⁢ Enter the command‌ SetDefaultUserFolder.cmd nazevslozky,replacing nazevslozky with ⁣the desired folder name⁤ (maximum 16 Unicode ⁢characters).
* ⁤ Continue with the‍ login process. ‌The system will⁤ use the specified name if⁣ valid; otherwise, it will revert to its automatic naming convention.

The feature is⁣ currently limited to insider Preview builds and is not yet available ⁣in ⁢the stable release of Windows 11.
