windows 11 Installation Now Allows Custom User Folder Names Via Command Line
Microsoft is testing a feature that allows users to manually set the name of their user folder during Windows 11 installation, addressing a long-standing frustration with automatically generated folder names. Previously, Windows 11 required a Microsoft account sign-in during setup adn assigned a user folder name – often tied to the user’s email address – that couldn’t be customized. while workarounds existed to bypass the Microsoft account requirement, controlling the folder name remained elusive.
The new functionality, currently available in Windows 11 Insider Preview builds 26120.6772 and 26220.6772 (Beta and Dev channels), enables users to define the folder name using a command-line interface. This addresses concerns about potentially unwieldy or undesirable folder names created by the installer.
To utilize the feature:
* During the Microsoft account sign-in page of the initial system setup wizard, press Shift+F10 to open the Command Prompt.
* Type cd oobe and press Enter.
* Enter the command SetDefaultUserFolder.cmd nazevslozky, replacing nazevslozky with the desired folder name (maximum 16 Unicode characters).
* Continue with the login process. The system will use the specified name if valid; otherwise, it will revert to its automatic naming convention.
The feature is currently limited to insider Preview builds and is not yet available in the stable release of Windows 11.
